4 Reasons Why Volunteering Will Change Your Life
When you search for advice on how to change your life, you will hear people say ‘Change your job’ ‘Get more productive’ ‘Think positively’ but very few think of volunteering. Since I first volunteered, I have met monkeys in the amazon, mentored a young child to improve his behaviour at school and even landed my current job in no small part thanks to my volunteering efforts. Here are some of the benefits you can get, simply by sparing a little of your time:
- It Makes You Happy! – Possibly the main goal in life is to be happy. Western wisdom suggests that you build up possessions and money, but scientific research* has suggested that the more people volunteer the happier they are. The same can be said of experiences, and volunteering truly is an experience.
- You help others – Giving back a little time, helps others immeasurably. I gave a couple of hours each Saturday to mentor a young kid who was in trouble at school, by the end of it his performance had dramatically improved. Helping others is another sure fire way to make you feel happy too.
- It will help you land a job – Employers care far more about what you do outside of academics and work than you might think. Supplementing your experience with voluntary work shows that you are driven, caring etc. and also builds up your skills. It is a great way to overcome the ‘Catch 22’ of needing experience too.
- It isn’t all give, give, give… – When I volunteered in the amazon I had a place to stay in the heart of the jungle. This gave me experiences that I would’ve paid a lot of money for like befriending a Monkey and a Tapir. Volunteering at festivals gets you free tickets to see some of your favourite bands too!
We believe that one of the best things you can do with your time is to volunteer. It really doesn’t have to take long, even a few hours a month can benefit you and those around you. So what are you waiting for? Volunteer today!
